Most Americans have heard of Lyme disease.
For years, it has been the tick-borne illness that dominated headlines and worried families during the summer months.

But medical experts are now raising concerns about another threat that receives far less attention and may be far more dangerous.
As tick populations explode across large parts of the country, doctors are warning that a rare but deadly virus is quietly spreading alongside them. Unlike Lyme disease, which often requires a tick to remain attached for many hours before infection occurs, this virus can begin infecting a person almost immediately after a bite.
Health experts say the danger is real, the cases are increasing, and many Americans have never even heard its name.
