Longtime Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy suffered a devastating defeat in Louisiana’s GOP Senate primary, crashing out of the race in embarrassing fashion after finishing in third place. The stunning result marks a major triumph for President Donald Trump and the America First movement, which has spent years targeting Republicans viewed as disloyal to the conservative base.
Advancing to the June 27 runoff are Trump-endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, both of whom capitalized on growing anger among grassroots conservatives frustrated with Cassidy’s record in Washington.
For many Louisiana voters, Saturday’s outcome was about accountability.
