Congress Drops Hammer on Foreign Lawsuit Profiteers

The growing role of foreign money in America’s legal system is finally getting attention on Capitol Hill, and Republicans are preparing to strike back with legislation aimed at shutting down what critics call a hidden industry profiting off U.S. lawsuits.

For years, Democrats warned Americans about foreign influence in elections, social media, and business. But while Washington obsessed over political interference, a much quieter operation was expanding inside the U.S. court system.

Now Republicans say overseas investors have been quietly turning American lawsuits into a global investment vehicle.

And they want it stopped.

A new bill introduced by Kevin Hern and Thom Tillis would dramatically increase taxes on litigation funders, especially foreign-backed firms that finance lawsuits against American companies while paying little or nothing back into the U.S. system.

Supporters argue the current setup rewards foreign actors for weaponizing American courts against domestic businesses.

Critics say it has already become a massive industry operating almost entirely in the shadows.
