For years, Stacey Abrams positioned herself as the face of “democracy protection” in America, raising enormous sums from wealthy donors, left-wing activists, and national Democrats while insisting Georgia’s election system was fundamentally broken.
Now, the woman who spent years accusing others of undermining election confidence is facing mounting scrutiny over millions of dollars her own political network allegedly kept hidden from voters and regulators.
Georgia state senators have officially subpoenaed Abrams and ordered her to appear before lawmakers Friday morning at the State Capitol, where investigators plan to question her about a sprawling campaign finance scandal tied to the now-defunct New Georgia Project.
The subpoena comes after the Georgia State Ethics Commission slammed the organization and its affiliated Action Fund with a historic $300,000 penalty earlier this year after the groups admitted to multiple campaign finance violations connected to the 2018 election cycle.
But Republican lawmakers say the fine barely scratches the surface.
