A Southern California mayor is now at the center of a stunning federal case that is sending shockwaves through local government circles and raising serious questions about Chinese Communist Party influence operations inside the United States.
Federal prosecutors announced Monday that Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang has been charged with acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government while allegedly helping push Beijing-approved propaganda to audiences in America.
The case is especially explosive because prosecutors say Wang was not operating from the shadows. She allegedly carried out these activities while building political influence in Los Angeles County and later serving as mayor of the wealthy California city of Arcadia.
According to the Department of Justice, Wang has already agreed to plead guilty under a federal plea agreement that could send her to prison for up to a decade.
Federal officials did not mince words about the seriousness of the allegations.
“Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli.
