As tensions continue simmering in the Middle East, a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran may now be on the verge of collapse after a dangerous naval confrontation erupted in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
According to new reports from U.S. Central Command, American warships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz came under direct attack from Iranian forces Wednesday in what officials are describing as one of the most serious military flareups since the ceasefire agreement was announced.
The confrontation unfolded as three U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers moved through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. Iranian missiles and drones were reportedly launched toward the USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason during the transit.
Military officials say the American vessels successfully intercepted the incoming threats before any damage could be inflicted.
No U.S. personnel were injured and no ships were hit.
But the incident instantly reignited fears that the uneasy pause in fighting between Washington and Tehran may already be unraveling behind the scenes.
