Juan Antonio Salinas Leija left for work at a construction site in north Houston and never returned. Concern quickly turned into tragedy when a family member went searching for him and made a horrifying discovery inside the very home he had been helping renovate.
Police say the suspect is a 19-year-old Venezuelan national, identified as Josue Abraham Chirino-Leonice, who allegedly attacked his co-worker with a sledgehammer inside the residence.
According to officials, the two men had been working together on the renovation project when the violent incident occurred.
A Troubling Timeline
Authorities say Chirino-Leonice first entered the United States in November 2023 as part of the Unaccompanied Alien Children program. After crossing the southern border, he was released into the country and placed with a sponsor.
What happened next is now under intense scrutiny.
Critics argue there was little to no meaningful follow-up after his release, raising questions about oversight and accountability within the system.
