A deeply emotional story involving a 15-year-old girl, a space mission, and a final unanswered wish has captured widespread attention online—drawing over two million views and prompting an unexpected response from Elon Musk that many say turned a personal tragedy into a moment of public reflection.
At the center of the story is Liv Perrotto, a young girl who spent nearly five years battling undifferentiated sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer diagnosed when she was just 10 years old. Despite her illness, Liv remained remarkably engaged with science, space exploration, and creative projects that connected her to the broader world beyond her hospital room.
One of those projects came when she was 11 years old, when the Polaris Dawn mission crew invited her to design a zero-gravity indicator—a small object carried aboard spacecraft that floats once weightlessness is achieved. Liv quickly sketched a Shiba Inu in about 30 minutes, drawing inspiration from Elon Musk’s own dog, Floki.
That drawing became something far larger than anyone expected. The crew named it Asteroid. In September 2024, Asteroid flew aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Resilience. During the live broadcast, viewers around the world watched as the small plush figure floated freely inside the capsule, symbolizing weightlessness—and, for many, something far more personal.
