At the center of the dispute is a news report suggesting Iran may attempt to launch drone attacks from vessels off the U.S. coastline. According to the story, the possibility was raised in a law-enforcement communication circulated to California authorities. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly warned state police about “unidentified vessels” that could potentially deploy drones toward unknown targets along the California coast.
The story quickly gained traction online, fueling concerns about a possible retaliation for the military campaign known as Operation Epic Fury. But officials inside the White House pushed back almost immediately, arguing that the report left out a critical detail: the intelligence behind the warning was never confirmed.
