Jackson Delivers a Shock to Liberal Lawyers
Justice Jackson authored the unanimous ruling in Urias-Orellana v. Bondi, a case that challenged how federal courts review asylum denials. The plaintiffs were a Salvadoran family who entered the U.S. illegally in 2021, claiming a hitman threatened their lives back home.
An immigration judge evaluated the evidence, found the family’s claims credible—but still denied asylum. Why? Because, legally, threats or extortion from criminals do not automatically meet the definition of “persecution.”
