Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales is back in familiar political territory—a runoff election—after his controversial vote for Joe Biden’s gun control legislation continues to haunt him. Despite receiving former President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Gonzales failed to secure over 50% of the vote, setting the stage for another showdown against his 2024 challenger, known online as the “AK Guy.”
Gonzales’s Gun Vote Still Resonates With Texas Republicans
In June 2022, Gonzales joined just 13 other House Republicans in passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Washington’s first major gun legislation in nearly three decades, signed into law by President Biden. The bill funded red flag programs, expanded background checks for buyers under 21 to include juvenile records, and stripped gun rights from dating partners convicted of domestic violence.
Texas Republican leaders were quick to respond. Multiple county GOP organizations issued censure resolutions, and in March 2023, the State Republican Executive Committee followed suit, voting 57-5 to officially censure Gonzales. The party authorized funds to educate voters about his record and stripped him of future party support. Gonzales, however, pushed forward, undeterred.
