New York City’s socialist mayor, who built his campaign around being Donald Trump’s “worst nightmare,” has quietly discovered the limits of ideology when money is at stake. Despite the campaign rhetoric, the mayor recently appeared at the Oval Office armed with a photoshopped newspaper seemingly designed to boost the president’s image.
And now, he’s asking for $21 billion in federal funding.
From “Fascist” to Fund Request
Zohran Mamdani called Trump a fascist during the heat of the mayoral race. Yet on February 26, he made a second, unannounced visit to the White House, leaving the trip off his public schedule until reporters spotted him en route.
Mamdani carried a mock front page of the New York Daily News, featuring Trump’s face under the headline: “TRUMP TO CITY: LET’S BUILD.” Beside it was the actual 1975 Daily News cover, which famously proclaimed “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD” when President Gerald Ford refused federal aid to New York.
