President Donald Trump’s aggressive energy blockade against Cuba is designed to pressure the island’s communist rulers, who are teetering on the edge of collapse. The strategy aims to accelerate the regime’s decline, as decades of mismanagement and oppression meet a new economic squeeze from the United States.

The human cost is severe. The blockade has deepened Cuba’s long-running economic crisis, leaving 10 million citizens struggling to access basic necessities. Fuel shortages are disrupting water delivery, while food and medicine are becoming increasingly scarce.

“There’s a number of epidemics rippling through the population right now, repression is increasing as the regime feels cornered, and they are not signaling any willingness to negotiate with the United States,” said Sebastián Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University.

“These people are really, really bad guys, and they have shown this capacity to survive difficult crises,” Arcos added. “I don’t think they can survive this one.”
