Two Americans are dead following violent confrontations tied to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minneapolis, and Democrats wasted no time assigning blame. Within hours, party leaders pointed fingers at President Trump’s renewed deportation push, framing the tragedy as proof that immigration enforcement itself is the problem.
But Republicans say that narrative leaves out a crucial detail: Democratic leaders and sanctuary city policies helped create the dangerous conditions that led to the chaos.
Now, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have unveiled a sweeping list of ten demands they claim would “fix” ICE. Republicans argue the proposal does something else entirely—cripples immigration enforcement while giving sanctuary cities effective veto power over federal law.
DHS Funding Held Hostage Over ICE Ultimatum
Schumer and Jeffries formally presented their demands Wednesday in a letter to Republican leadership, making clear they are prepared to withhold Department of Homeland Security funding unless their conditions are met.
Democrats describe the list as a set of “common sense solutions” designed to protect constitutional rights. Republicans see a coordinated effort to neutralize ICE operations, particularly in Democrat-run states and cities.
