A federal judge appointed during the Clinton era has stepped in once again to halt President Donald Trump’s efforts to tighten election security, issuing a sweeping ruling that permanently blocks key portions of his executive order requiring proof of United States citizenship to vote or register in federal elections.

On Friday, US District Judge Colleen Kollar Kotelly issued a permanent injunction against the Trump administration, siding with left wing activist groups who sued to stop the order. The ruling shuts down one of the most aggressive federal efforts in years to ensure that only American citizens are allowed to participate in US elections.
The executive order, signed by President Trump last March, was titled Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections. It was designed to strengthen existing federal law and close loopholes that critics say allow non citizens to slip onto voter rolls.
Trump made his intentions clear in the order, stating:
“It is the policy of my Administration to enforce Federal law and to protect the integrity of our election process.”
