At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Elon Musk once again grabbed headlines with a bold declaration: Tesla plans to sell humanoid robots to the public by the end of 2027.
Of course, Musk immediately included his usual caveat: the robots will ship “when we’re confident that it’s very high reliability, very high safety, and the range of functionality is also very high.” Those carefully worded qualifiers give him an easy exit if the ambitious timeline proves unrealistic.
Tesla’s Optimus Robot: A Track Record of Missed Deadlines
This isn’t the first time Musk has made grand promises about Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus. Back in 2022, he claimed production would be ready by 2023. That obviously didn’t happen.
He later promised “thousands” of robots would be operational in Tesla factories by the end of 2025. Independent reporting revealed the actual production number was likely just a few hundred units—far short of the hype.
