According to early reports, the aircraft involved was a Bombardier Challenger 600 attempting to depart as heavy snow and low visibility conditions battered much of the state. The crash happened during a massive snowstorm that dumped more than a foot of snow across parts of Maine, creating hazardous conditions on roads and runways alike.

Eight people were onboard the jet at the time of the crash. As of Monday morning, officials had not released detailed information regarding the condition of the passengers or crew.

What authorities did confirm, however, was alarming.

A government official told Reuters that there was a “significant fire” following the crash, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the incident and the safety of those onboard.

The airport was quickly closed after the crash, grounding all incoming and outgoing flights. Local media outlets reported widespread cancellations as first responders secured the scene and assessed damage.
