Arizona’s top law enforcement official is facing intense backlash after comments many Americans see as reckless and dangerous. In a televised interview with a local station, Kris Mayes suggested that Arizonans could be legally justified in using lethal force against masked federal agents and repeatedly pointed to the state’s Stand Your Ground statute to make her case.
The remarks were made during a discussion about possible Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the state. Rather than emphasizing cooperation between agencies, Mayes unveiled a new webpage encouraging residents to film and report federal officers. The page specifically targets Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with CBP and Homeland Security Investigations, framing their presence as inherently suspicious.
“Members of the public in Arizona should use this form to report (including submitting video footage or photographic evidence) potentially unlawful activity in Arizona by federal agents or personnel, such as officers or agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), or Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Independent evidence, submitted directly to our office, could be critical for future independent investigations into alleged misconduct,” the webpage reads.
That warning set the tone for what followed. Speaking to 12 News reporter Brahm Resnik, Mayes issued a direct threat to federal officers operating in the state.
