Trump’s Greenland Tariffs Rock NATO

President Donald Trump ignited a political firestorm after announcing tariffs on eight European countries, tying the economic pressure directly to Greenland and its strategic future. Predictably, NATO allies erupted in outrage. European leaders accused Trump of destabilizing alliances, while media outlets rushed to frame the move as reckless.

But Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stepped into the spotlight and dismantled that narrative in a way that left Europe’s credibility in tatters. His message was blunt: Europe wants America to provide security while simultaneously bankrolling the very enemy threatening that security.

During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Bessent explained why Trump has little reason to trust European governments with Greenland’s defense. Host Kristen Welker pressed him repeatedly, attempting to cast Trump as the aggressor. Bessent didn’t flinch. Instead, he pointed to Europe’s own record—one that undermines every lecture it gives Washington.

“President Trump told the Europeans, ‘Do not build Nord Stream 2. Do not rely on Russian oil,’” Bessent said. “And guess what is funding Russia’s efforts against Ukraine? European purchases of Russian oil.”
