Democrats Ready to Shut Down Government

Congressional Democrats are openly escalating pressure on Republicans by signaling they are willing to push the federal government toward a shutdown if their demands targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are not met.

The brewing confrontation comes as lawmakers remain deadlocked over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, with ICE once again becoming the flashpoint in a broader ideological battle over immigration enforcement, law enforcement authority, and public safety.

Democratic leaders in both chambers have tied their opposition to the DHS spending bill to the January 8 shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a self-described “ICE Watch” activist who was shot in Minneapolis after accelerating her vehicle toward a federal agent standing directly in front of her car. Video footage of the incident shows the agent positioned in the vehicle’s path at the time of the shooting. Still, the event set off days of protests and unrest across the Twin Cities, some of which devolved into rioting.

In the aftermath, Democrats have seized on the incident to justify sweeping restrictions on ICE operations, using the DHS funding process as leverage. Several lawmakers have warned that failure to accept these conditions could result in a partial government shutdown.
