“That ambush, carried out by an ISIS terrorist, resulted in the tragic deaths of two American soldiers and one U.S. civilian interpreter,” the statement said.
Central Command released dramatic footage alongside its announcement, showing U.S. fighter jets launching into the sky and grainy black-and-white video capturing multiple explosions as ISIS positions were obliterated. The visuals underscored the scale and intensity of the mission.
Saturday’s airstrikes were not limited to a single region. Instead, they targeted ISIS assets throughout Syria in what the Pentagon described as a sustained effort to prevent future attacks and protect American personnel operating in hostile territory.
“Saturday’s strikes ‘targeted ISIS throughout Syria as part of our ongoing commitment to root out Islamic terrorism against our warfighters, prevent future attacks, and protect American and partner forces in the region,’” Central Command said.
The message from U.S. leadership was unmistakably firm.
“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” the statement said.
President Trump had made clear in December that retaliation was inevitable following the Palmyra attack. Speaking at the time, he emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the volatility of the region where the ambush occurred.
“This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria that is not fully controlled by them,” Trump said at the time.
Trump also referenced the reaction of Syria’s leadership, signaling international support for decisive action against ISIS.
“The President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack,” Trump said. “There will be very serious retaliation. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Saturday’s mission marked the second retaliatory strike under Operation Hawkeye Strike. U.S. forces previously struck dozens of ISIS targets on December 20, delivering an early warning that the Trump administration would not tolerate attacks on American lives.
Fox News reporter Lucas Thompson noted that the latest wave of strikes aligns with Trump’s pledge to “avenge” the December attack and restore deterrence against terrorist groups operating in the region.
While the U.S. was demonstrating military resolve abroad, President Trump was also signaling a potential diplomatic shift closer to home. In a separate development, tensions between Washington and Venezuela appeared to ease following a surprising move by the Venezuelan government.
Trump took to Truth Social to praise what he called a “smart gesture” from Venezuela, a notable change in tone less than a week after a U.S.-backed operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro—an event that had sparked fierce backlash from Caracas and its allies.
Trump suggested the situation had evolved positively.
“Venezuela is releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign of ‘Seeking Peace,’” Trump began. “This is a very important and smart gesture. The U.S.A. and Venezuela are working well together, especially as it pertains to rebuilding, in a much bigger, better, and more modern form, their oil and gas infrastructure.”
The cooperation reportedly prompted Trump to reconsider further military action.
“Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks, which looks like it will not be needed,” the president posted.
Still, Trump made it clear that American strength would remain on display.
“However, all ships will stay in place for safety and security purposes,” Trump said.
Trump also highlighted a potential economic windfall for the United States.
“At least 100 Billion Dollars will be invested by BIG OIL, all of whom I will be meeting with today at The White House,” he posted.
Following Maduro’s capture, Trump warned that Venezuela’s vice president would need to cooperate—or face serious consequences—making it clear that while diplomacy is welcome, American resolve remains unshaken.
