Texas Republicans scored a major legal victory this week as the Supreme Court cleared the path for the state’s controversial new congressional map, sparking outrage from Democrats. Among the most vocal critics is Rep. Jasmine Crockett, whose political future now hangs in the balance.
On December 4, 2025, the nation’s highest court issued a 6–3 emergency order granting Texas Republicans’ request to pause a lower court injunction. That injunction had temporarily blocked the state’s recently enacted redistricting plan. With the stay in place, Texas can move forward with its new map in time for the 2026 midterm elections, even as legal battles continue over the plan’s legality.
The new districts could prove devastating for Democrats. Under the redrawn lines, Republicans have the potential to pick up as many as five additional House seats. The changes reflect population growth and voter trends in the state—shifts Democrats have tried to counteract through repeated court challenges and accusations of racial gerrymandering.
