Minnesota Democrats are once again lining up against the Trump administration—this time over a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents operating across the state. Rather than supporting federal efforts to enforce immigration law, top Democratic officials are openly attacking the operation and framing it as dangerous, divisive, and politically motivated.
At the center of the backlash is Governor Tim Walz, whose tenure has been marked by soft-on-crime policies, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a progressive darling who presides over a city still struggling with rising violence and disorder. Alongside other left-wing leaders, the two gathered this week at Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis to publicly condemn the federal government and defend illegal immigrants who are living in the state—many of them supported by taxpayer-funded programs.
The event was less about public safety and more about political posturing. While communities across Minnesota grapple with violent crime, drug trafficking, and overwhelmed public services, state and city leaders chose to direct their outrage at federal law enforcement officers tasked with enforcing existing immigration laws.
