A disturbing ruling out of Michigan is igniting nationwide fury, as critics say yet another federal judge has placed ideology ahead of public safety. The case highlights what many conservatives view as a dangerous pattern inside the federal judiciary—where radical compassion for criminals comes at the expense of innocent victims and American law.
According to reporting by The Detroit News, a violent illegal alien from Honduras who carried out a horrific sexual assault against a severely disabled woman will be eligible for release in just a few short years. The attacker, a repeat border violator, could walk free as early as July 2028—less than three years from now—despite the gravity of his crime.
The offender, 30-year-old Edys Renan Membreño Díaz, entered the United States illegally at least seven times since 2019. Despite multiple encounters with immigration enforcement, he repeatedly returned. In 2022, Díaz pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman with cerebral palsy in the laundry room of her apartment complex in Michigan.
In August 2024, U.S. District Judge Judith Levy—an appointee of Barack Obama—sentenced Díaz to time served. While she had the legal authority to add up to two additional years for immigration-related offenses, she declined to do so, effectively ensuring his early release.
