American forces came under deadly fire this weekend during a dangerous counterterrorism mission deep inside Syria, underscoring that the Islamic State remains a lethal threat despite years of military pressure.
A senior U.S. official confirmed Saturday that multiple American service members were wounded in what was described as an ambush style attack in central Syria. According to the official, some of the injuries were severe, raising immediate concern inside the Pentagon and among U.S. allies monitoring the region.
Early reports from local Syrian officials, speaking to Reuters, indicated that a convoy made up of U.S. personnel and Syrian security forces was attacked while operating in the historic city of Palmyra. The joint force was conducting operations aimed at rooting out remaining ISIS fighters who continue to operate in Syria’s vast desert regions.
Initially, the Department of War acknowledged awareness of the situation but offered limited details as events were still unfolding. “We are aware of reports,” the department told Fox News, adding that it had “nothing additional to provide at this time.”
