Conservative commentator Benny Johnson highlighted the bizarre moment: “CNN’s Jake Tapper labels the J6 pipe bomber suspect Brian Cole a ’30 year old WHITE man.’ You can’t make this stuff up.”
The timing could not have been more suspicious. Just weeks earlier, Blaze Media journalist Steve Baker published a widely shared investigation pointing to former Capitol Police officer Shauni Kerkhoff as the alleged bomber, citing gait analysis and whistleblower testimony. Republicans in Congress even circulated an 11-page disclosure accusing the FBI of burying the truth. The Bureau quickly rejected the report, and Kerkhoff’s attorney dismissed it as “recklessly false.”
Then, out of nowhere, the FBI unveiled Cole. And mere minutes into CNN’s coverage, Tapper labeled him a “white man,” shaping the narrative before millions of viewers saw the actual photo.
That quick slip conveniently echoed the same storyline Democrats have pushed for years: that a white, right-wing extremist orchestrated the bomb plot as part of an “insurrection.” But Cole’s background doesn’t align with that script. Reports indicate his family’s bail bond company focused on assisting illegal immigrants detained by ICE. The business even sued the Trump administration in 2018 over immigration bond rules and lost the case in late 2020.
The sequence of events is astonishing. Cole’s family loses a major immigration lawsuit against Trump just two months before the bombs were planted. Biden’s FBI sits on the evidence for four years. Trump returns to office, reviews the dormant file, and Cole is arrested within months. And when CNN breaks the news, their lead anchor calls the suspect “white” on air, even though the photo shown seconds later disproves it.
CNN has pulled similar moves before. In 2024, analyst John Miller described a shooting suspect as “male, possibly white,” despite surveillance imagery already disproving the suggestion. Once can be sloppy. Twice becomes suspicious. But this latest episode unfolded at the exact moment the J6 pipe bomb narrative was unraveling.
Anonymous sources now claim Cole made statements sympathetic to anarchist ideas, though authorities have yet to outline a motive. That detail alone torpedoes the tidy “MAGA bomber” narrative the media preferred.
The controversy isn’t merely about Jake Tapper’s blunder. The true question is why the FBI allowed this case to gather dust for four years, and why the media appeared so determined to pre-frame the suspect’s identity before the public could see the evidence for themselves.
