“We believe that we have only scratched the very top of the surface of how deep this goes,” Miller told Hannity, signaling that the scope of wrongdoing may far exceed the already staggering numbers.
Republicans in Minnesota Say Walz Is Bracing for Impact
State Republicans are signaling that the governor should expect nothing short of a political firestorm. Minnesota legislator Harry Niska said the pressure now building around the Democratic governor is unlike anything he has previously faced.
“The scrutiny is intense and it’s going to get more intense and I think he realizes that,” Niska said, predicting that the months ahead will not be kind to the administration in St. Paul.
“He’s never gotten this level of scrutiny — he’s definitely going to continue to get skepticism from the administration, from Congress and I expect that is only going to intensify,” he added.
Niska also pointed to the sheer number of questionable programs that distributed public funds with little oversight. “The list is so long all of the programs that have just been shoveling money out the door to anyone that sets up an LLC or a nonprofit,” he said.
A Billion-Dollar Trail of Fraud — With More to Come
Federal prosecutors have already tied roughly 1 billion dollars in fraudulent activity to pandemic-era aid distributed in Minnesota. The fallout has produced 59 convictions so far, with charges filed against 80 individuals linked to the scheme. But investigators say the real total may be far higher.
Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler revealed that the agency is still uncovering fraudulent loans even this week.
“In just the last two days, SBA has uncovered at least $1 million in PPP and EIDL loans that were granted to individuals indicted as part of the broader billion-dollar pandemic fraud scheme in Minnesota,” she wrote.
“We continue to investigate these organizations and executives to determine their citizenship status, the legitimacy of their nonprofit work, and other requirements for loan eligibility,” she added.
Loeffler also sounded a warning that the scandal is far from resolved: “The fraud in this state runs deeper than was ever previously reported. SBA is working around the clock to get answers and make taxpayers whole.”
Trump Weighed In With Characteristic Force
Former President Donald Trump has long criticized the concentration of Somali refugees in Minnesota. The BBC previously reported Trump’s blunt assessment: Somalis should “go back to where they came from” and “their country is no good for a reason.” He added, “I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you,” warning that America could “go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country.”
What Comes Next
With Washington now fully engaged, the scandal threatens to reshape the political landscape in Minnesota and beyond. Investigators insist the operation was enabled by lax oversight, loose regulations, and politically protected networks that grew more powerful during Walz’s tenure.
If the early findings are truly only “the very top of the surface,” as Miller warned, the country may be watching the beginning of one of the most consequential fraud cases of the decade.
