Authorities detailed luxury spending sprees at Coach, Canada Goose, Michael Kors, Nike, and Nordstrom. More than a million dollars allegedly flowed straight into Yusuf’s personal bank account, with nearly $387,000 withdrawn in cash.
It didn’t take a jury long to see what prosecutors saw. A Hennepin County panel convicted Yusuf on all six felony counts after just four hours of deliberation. As jury foreperson Ben Walfoort put it, “It was not a difficult decision whatsoever… it was beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Yet in November, Judge Sarah West — a Democrat appointee and former public defender — wiped out the entire verdict.
She claimed prosecutors leaned too heavily on circumstantial evidence and failed to rule out other “reasonable inferences.” In other words, she overruled twelve citizens who sat through every moment of testimony.
Walfoort did not hide his disbelief. “I am shocked,” he said. “I’m shocked based off of all of the evidence that was presented to us and the obvious guilt that we saw based off of the said evidence.”
Minnesota Senator Blasts Judge as “Extremist”
State Senator Michael Holmstrom, a Republican, didn’t hold back.
“I think that she is a true extremist, that her ideology is running her courtroom and damaging our justice system,” Holmstrom told Fox News Digital. “People in Minnesota are questioning whether or not the judicial system can be trusted. And with judges like this, I see why.”
Holmstrom also revealed that sealed evidence in the case included a mysterious international money order tied to an unknown recipient in an unknown country. His request to review that exhibit has so far gone unanswered.
The senator said he was “outraged” that West overturned the guilty verdict, arguing she stepped “outside her authority.”
Fraud Is Exploding In Minnesota — And Democrats Keep Looking Away
This case isn’t unusual in Minnesota — that’s the problem. The state is drowning in fraud scandals, including the now-infamous Feeding Our Future scheme where $250 million in COVID relief money vanished into criminal networks.
A report from the Manhattan Institute even alleged that some Minnesota fraud pipelines were funneling cash to Al-Shabaab, a Somali terrorist organization.
Former President Donald Trump recently slammed the situation, saying “Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing.”
When even a unanimous jury verdict doesn’t stick, it’s no wonder Minnesotans feel their system is broken.
A Judge Admits the Fraud Was Troubling — Then Lets the Defendant Walk
In her ruling, Judge West acknowledged she was “troubled by the manner in which fraud was able to be perpetuated at Promise Health” — yet she still erased the jury’s decision and handed Yusuf a victory that prosecutors are now appealing.
Yusuf’s attorney, Ian Birrell, unsurprisingly celebrated the reversal, saying, “Judge West’s ruling affirms what we have maintained from the beginning: our client Mr. Yusuf was wrongfully accused and did not commit fraud or racketeering.”
But the message this sends across Minnesota is unmistakable.
A jury saw the fake office.
They saw the nonexistent services.
They saw the million-dollar transfers and luxury spending binges.
They convicted him on every count.
And one judge decided none of that mattered.
Minnesota has become the national warning sign for what happens when fraud explodes under Democrat leadership and activist judges override the public’s right to justice. If this verdict can vanish, what criminal won’t try their luck next?
