Minneapolis officials attempted to project calm this week, but the message coming from the city’s police leadership set off even more alarm bells. During a tense Tuesday press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara urged Somali residents — as well as other immigrant communities — to immediately call 911 if they spot masked individuals detaining people in their neighborhoods. The warning came amid growing fears that unknown actors may be posing as law enforcement.
O’Hara admitted publicly that the department has already received multiple troubling reports, signaling that these incidents are not isolated or imagined. At the podium, he acknowledged that some of the masked individuals seen in Minneapolis neighborhoods “may be kidnapping people,” and he insisted that residents must err on the side of caution.
The chief told residents that if they have even the slightest uncertainty about whether those carrying out detentions are legitimate officers, they should dial 911 without hesitation. He said the department would fully investigate each call, document every detail, and take action where necessary — an unusual level of emphasis that left many wondering what the MPD isn’t saying.
