This wasn’t just about campaign finance. Prosecutors warned Michel’s actions posed national-security concerns, corrupted the political system, and created dangerous backchannels for foreign interests to manipulate U.S. policy.
Defense Calls the Sentence Absurd — and Plans to Appeal
Michel’s attorney, Peter Zeidenberg, called the 14-year punishment “completely disproportionate to the offense.” He argued that Michel never deserved anything close to a life sentence and confirmed an immediate appeal is coming.
The defense team had pushed for just three years. They accused the government of inflating sentencing guidelines to absurd extremes, writing that the prosecution’s suggestion of a life term “would cause Inspector Javert to recoil.”
Their point was simple: life sentences are used for terrorists and cartel bosses, not entertainers involved in political donation schemes.

While Michel Faces Prison, Obama Is Praising Socialists

He told listeners, “Tuesday was nice, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. And your task is going to be not to impose litmus tests.”
Obama pointed to mainstream Democrat Abigail Spanberger and socialist Mamdani as equal pillars of the party’s upcoming direction, saying Democrats must welcome everyone who shares their “vision.”
He added that Democrats should aim for a politics rooted in dignity, respect, and the belief that Americans share something “extraordinary” at their core.
The Rise of Socialist Politics — and a Warning for 2028
Mayor Mamdani’s platform reads like a far-left wish list: tax increases on the wealthy, a citywide rent freeze, government-run grocery stores, and free childcare and bus service. Despite this radical agenda, he won decisively.
And that’s what has some political analysts sounding the alarm.
A Gallup poll from September revealed the stark ideological shift: only 42 percent of Democrats view capitalism positively, while 66 percent have a favorable view of socialism.
Political analyst Chris Cillizza responded bluntly the next day, warning Democrats they’re heading straight for an electoral cliff. He cautioned, “I guess it’s not terribly surprising, but I do think if I am a Democrat who wants to win the 2028 election … That would worry me candidly because socialism broadly will not sell.”
Cillizza added, “You can call it democratic socialism. You can call it whatever you want. But the idea of socialism will not sell in the country.”
