For 43 long days, Democrats dragged the country through a storm of uncertainty and hardship. Millions of Americans were stuck wondering how long Washington’s political theatrics would threaten their paychecks, their benefits, and their stability. And now, Vice President JD Vance is making it clear: none of it had to happen.
Appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program, Vance didn’t mince words. The shutdown—one of the most disruptive in modern history—was completely avoidable.
He revealed that Democrats could have accepted the same deal nearly a month and a half earlier.
“We could have struck this exact deal 45 days ago,” Vance told Hannity. “In fact, we met with Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer and said we will pass this exact deal. They said no.”
That refusal set off a domino effect of pain and uncertainty. According to Vance, Senate Democrats refused to advance the same House bill 14 times, repeatedly blocking it even as the country braced for the fallout. Federal employees missed paychecks. Air traffic controllers were forced to work without pay. Tens of millions wondered whether their food assistance would disappear.
