Vance: Dem Leaders Terrified of Party Extremists

Vice President J.D. Vance pulled back the curtain on what really unfolded during the bruising 43-day government shutdown, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity that Democrats were quietly desperate behind closed doors—even as they publicly marched in lockstep with their party’s far-left leaders. According to Vance, the Democratic caucus wasn’t unified at all. They were intimidated, frustrated, and, as Vance described it, essentially “held hostage” by the most radical wing of their party.

President Donald Trump ultimately ended the shutdown late Wednesday night by signing a continuing resolution—something he had been ready to do far earlier. The only reason the standoff dragged on for weeks was because Democratic leadership repeatedly blocked the exact same proposal, a stunning 14 times, until five Senate Democrats finally broke ranks. Hannity asked Vance whether Democrats had been speaking privately during the stalemate.

Vance did not hesitate. “Of course. Privately we were having conversations all the time. And, frankly, privately, the Democrats would recognize the position of their far left was crazy. But they all feel a little bit like they are being held hostage by their far left,” Vance told Hannity. The vice president made clear that many Democrats knew their own strategy was unhinged—but were too afraid to defy their leadership.
