Former Congressman Dan Bishop, a well-known Trump ally and three-term lawmaker from North Carolina, is set to take on a pivotal role in the Justice Department. President Trump has appointed Bishop to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina, a strategic placement in Trump’s ongoing effort to strengthen conservative leadership in key federal positions.
Bishop, who has been serving as Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) since March 2025, could step into the U.S. Attorney position on an interim basis as early as next week. He will succeed Clifton T. Barrett, who was appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi in June 2025. This appointment aligns with Trump’s broader plan to install trusted allies in Justice Department posts to fight what he views as weaponization of federal agencies.
Conservative leaders have welcomed the move, praising Bishop for his steadfast commitment to conservative principles. The House Freedom Caucus lauded him as a “fearless conservative and true patriot,” noting his early advocacy on hot-button issues like defending women’s sports and opposing transgender access to bathrooms.
