A 100-year-old Royal Navy veteran who risked his life on D-Day has left millions heartbroken after saying he no longer believes the Britain he fought for was worth the sacrifice.
Alec Penstone, one of the few surviving heroes of World War II, appeared on Good Morning Britain ahead of Remembrance Day. But what was meant to be a solemn tribute to his fallen comrades turned into a gut-wrenching reflection on the decline of modern Britain.
“The sacrifice wasn’t worth it”
With tears in his eyes, Penstone recalled the countless lives lost fighting for freedom.
“My message is, I can see in my mind’s eye, rows and rows of white stones, of all the hundreds of my friends and everybody else, that gave their lives – for what?” he said. “The country of today… No, I’m sorry, the sacrifice wasn’t worth the result that it is now.”
When pressed by the host to explain, he didn’t hesitate.
“What we fought for was our freedom – we fought for it. Even now, it’s a darn sight worse than when I fought for it,” Penstone said, his voice trembling with emotion.
