That bold claim prompted reporters to confront Trump directly while he was en route to Tokyo on Monday. Instead of shutting down the speculation, Trump’s response only fueled the conversation further.
A reporter asked, “Sir, Steve Bannon said in a recent interview that there could be plans for you to be able to run and potentially win a third term in 2028. Is that something you’d be willing to challenge at the court to be able to do?”
Trump replied, “I haven’t really thought about it. We have some very good people as you know, but I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had. I mean I just solved eight wars and a ninth is coming. I believe Russia Ukraine will happen.”
The president then went on to highlight his foreign policy successes, saying, “But we just did– you know we just left and when you look at the treaty we just did, that was a war. Thousands of people were already shot at the border and when you look at what we just did, it was pretty amazing. We got a lot of pretty good credit. And I really have to thank Malaysia for that because the prime minister and everybody really helped get the two countries together. But, it was quite a great peace treaty. But that was one of eight and it makes me feel good. I mean it’s millions of people we saved. I saved the lives of millions of people. That’s what’s important.”
When asked again about the 2028 field, Trump was upbeat but intentionally vague. “Well, we have great people,” he said. “Well, I don’t have to get into that, but we have one of them standing right here. We have JD, obviously. The vice president is great. Marco is great. I’m not sure if anybody would run again. I think if they have a form to grip it would be unstoppable, I do. I really believe that. I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.”
The reporter pressed, “You’re not ruling out a third term?”
Trump shot back, “Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me. All I can tell you is that we have a great group of people which they don’t.”
Then came another twist. One reporter asked if Trump might consider running as vice president — a legal loophole some have speculated about. Trump didn’t reject the theory outright. “Yeah, I’d be allowed to do that,” he said.
When asked if he would actually consider it, Trump laughed it off, saying, “No, you’d be allowed to do that, but I wouldn’t want– I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute.” Pressed further, Trump added, “Yeah, I wouldn’t rule that out because it’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It’s too cute. It’s not– it wouldn’t be right.”
Trump has previously hinted at a potential third term — often claiming he’s “just joking.” Yet, each time he brings it up, the speculation grows louder.
Earlier this year, Trump told NBC News, “There are methods which you could do it” and admitted “a lot of people want me to do it,” though he added that “it is far too early to think about it.”
Still, with approval ratings now at 45.1%, his highest ever according to RealClearPolitics, and with reports of “Trump 2028” hats making their way through the White House, the former president appears to be testing the waters.
Whether it’s a serious plan or just classic Trumpian showmanship, one thing is certain: the idea of “Trump 2028” has Washington — and the media — in a frenzy. And judging by his grin aboard Air Force One, that’s exactly how he likes it.

THE DON`S THIRD TERM. I`m hoping to see it soon.
