The image of Bernie Sanders as the principled outsider taking on Washington hypocrisy took a hit during a nationally televised town hall on Wednesday evening. The Vermont senator found himself at a loss when a sharp-eyed student audience member zeroed in on glaring contradictions in Democratic leadership strategy.

During the forum with Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez on CNN, the ongoing government shutdown was the headline issue: Democrats are refusing to back a continuing resolution unless Republicans first agree to extend the subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act, reportedly worth $1.5 trillion. But the narrative shifted when a student directly challenged the logic and consistency of the Democratic tactics.

American University student Rohan Naval — identifying as a Republican intern — honed in on the role of Chuck Schumer in the scenario. He asked Sanders a pointed question: how does this shutdown reflect on Schumer’s leadership? Instead of addressing that chain of command, Sanders deflected the blame. “Well, I think it reflects more on Mike Johnson’s leadership and President Trump’s leadership,” he replied.

Naval wasn’t accepting the sidestep. He fired back with the facts: “I think Chuck Schumer has voted for continuing resolutions 13 times in the last four years, and he has the opportunity to vote for one again, but he’s refusing to come to the table.”
