New York Attorney General Letitia James — long portrayed as a crusader for justice — is now facing a firestorm of her own. Documents obtained by the New York Post reveal that James has been quietly housing family members with criminal histories in properties she owns in Virginia. Even more shocking, federal prosecutors are now investigating whether those same properties are linked to bank fraud and false statement charges that could land James behind bars for decades.
A Family Affair Gone Wrong
Among the relatives tied to the scandal is James’ 21-year-old grand-niece, Cayla Thompson-Hairston, who recently found herself in serious legal trouble. Court documents show she was charged in April 2024 for lying about her felony record while trying to buy a gun in Suffolk, Virginia.
Prosecutors said she falsified information on federal paperwork to hide a previous felony — a 2020 malicious wounding charge, one of the most serious violent crimes in Virginia law. The statute covers intentionally shooting, stabbing, cutting, or inflicting bodily harm with intent to maim or kill.
Thompson-Hairston was reportedly a minor at the time, which sealed her case under juvenile protection laws. Later, prosecutors dropped the firearm charge after learning that her earlier felony had been downgraded to a misdemeanor through a plea deal — technically making her eligible to own a gun.
