The biggest school district in Iowa has been rocked by scandal after Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that the man running it was living in the U.S. illegally — and had been under a deportation order for more than a year.
Federal agents announced Friday that Dr. Ian Andre Roberts, superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was taken into custody following a dramatic chase involving state troopers and a police K9. Roberts, originally from Guyana, once competed as an Olympic runner before climbing the ranks of America’s education system. He was appointed head of the district in 2023, even though he had already been ordered removed from the United States.
A Shocking Pursuit
According to officials, Roberts bolted when immigration officers approached. He allegedly sped off in his vehicle before ditching it on the roadside. That’s when ICE agents, assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, deployed a K9 unit and tracked him down hiding in a wooded area only a few hundred yards away.
