The appeals court’s opinion was clear and decisive. “Trump has failed to identify any grounds that would warrant reconsidering our prior holding on presidential immunity. We also conclude that the district court did not err in any of the challenged rulings and that the jury’s damages awards are fair and reasonable,” the ruling stated.
Carroll originally won her suit after Trump had left office in 2023. The latest decision comes just a week after Trump’s legal team announced plans to petition the Supreme Court regarding a separate case tied to a 2022 tweet, which had already resulted in a $5 million judgment.
The White House has deferred to Trump’s personal legal team for comments, highlighting how this matter remains separate from official presidential duties and ongoing politics.
Trump first dismissed Carroll’s allegations publicly in 2019, suggesting the claims were timed to promote her memoir, What Do We Need Men For?, while insisting she was “not my type.” His response sparked additional legal complications, including defamation claims, some of which have resulted in settlements. ABC News, for instance, agreed to pay Trump $15 million after George Stephanopoulos falsely suggested multiple rape convictions during an interview.
