Democrat Congressman Jerrold Nadler of New York has announced he will not be running for re-election, marking the end of a decades-long career in Washington. The news, first reported by The New York Times, signals a major shake-up for Democrats as one of their longest-serving members steps aside.
At 78 years old, Nadler admitted that his time has come to an end and suggested the Democrat Party is better off with younger leadership. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” Nadler said, adding that a younger successor “can maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”
Nadler’s career spanned 34 years, making him the longest-serving Democrat in New York’s congressional delegation. Throughout his time in office, he positioned himself as one of the most outspoken liberal voices in the House, often placing himself at the center of political fights.
