President Donald Trump has reportedly signed off on a game-changing directive authorizing the U.S. military to unleash force against Latin American drug cartels officially recognized as foreign terrorist organizations — a move that could upend decades of cautious policy and send shockwaves through the criminal underworld.
According to a Friday report from The New York Times, this quiet but decisive order grants American forces formal authority to take on cartels both on land and in international waters — a responsibility that has largely been handled by federal law enforcement until now.
A source close to the White House told the outlet, “The president is determined to not just dismantle – but completely destroy – [Venezuelan dictator Nicolas] Maduro’s Cartel de Los Soles and obliterate their operations in the Western Hemisphere.”
The State Department’s current roster of designated foreign terrorist organizations tied to drug trafficking includes Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, Maduro’s Cartel de Los Soles, and the infamous Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) out of El Salvador.
