Just 24 hours before Trump’s remarks, Netanyahu had doubled down on his claims, stating unequivocally: “There is no policy of starvation in Gaza and there is no starvation in Gaza.”
But reports on the ground paint a starkly different picture. The Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health reported that 14 more people died from starvation in a single day, bringing the total since October 2023 to over 120. Images of gaunt children, overcrowded hospitals, and skeletal mothers have become impossible to ignore—even for world leaders.
NPR recently spotlighted the case of 18-month-old Mohammad Al-Motawaq, who weighs under 10 pounds—half of what a healthy child should weigh. His mother, Hidaya Al-Motawaq, shelters him in a makeshift tent by the sea, unable to provide anything but water.
“This war is targeting a generation, a generation of children who are below three years, because the central nervous system is nearly composed in [these] two, three years,” said Dr. Ahmed Al-Farrah of Nasser Hospital.
Medical experts have warned that the prolonged malnutrition is causing permanent developmental damage. Dr. Mohammed Mansour, a senior nutrition official with the International Rescue Committee, stated:
“We see increasing level of stunting,” explaining that organs like the liver and heart are not developing properly due to severe nutrient deficiencies.
While Trump acknowledged that the U.S. has been sending aid to Gaza, he stressed that it wasn’t enough.
“We’re giving a lot of money and a lot of food, and other nations are now stepping up.”
But he directed the responsibility squarely at Netanyahu.
“I want him to make sure they get the food. I want to make sure they get the food.”
Standing next to Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer didn’t mince words either, calling the humanitarian crisis “an absolute catastrophe.”

“The situation in Gaza is a mess,” Trump said. “They have to get food and safety right now.”
The data from humanitarian groups underscores the extent of the crisis. The United Nations reports that nearly one-third of Gaza’s population is going days without eating. Meanwhile, UNICEF found that 9% of children under five screened in mid-July were acutely malnourished—up from 2.4% in February. In Gaza City, that figure surged to a staggering 16%.
The only pediatric ward treating malnourished children has since shut down, citing an utter lack of supplies.
Despite months of pleas from aid groups and international leaders, Netanyahu’s government has refused to fully lift the blockade, which is widely blamed for choking off vital food shipments.
Trump’s statement marks a pivotal moment. Netanyahu, long considered untouchable thanks to unwavering U.S. support, now faces the political cost of losing his most powerful backer—at least rhetorically.
As starvation images circulate across screens worldwide, even Trump is finding it impossible to defend the indefensible.
“You can’t fake that,” he said. And no amount of spin from Netanyahu’s office can change the brutal reality now laid bare.
For Netanyahu, Trump’s words weren’t just a public contradiction—they were a direct challenge to his moral authority. And for Gaza’s suffering population, they may signal that the world is finally starting to pay attention.
