In a closed-door fundraiser in New Jersey last week, former President Barack Obama tore into top law firms and academic institutions for allegedly backing down in the face of the Trump administration, prioritizing their own prestige and profits over principles. The former president’s fiery remarks exposed growing tensions among liberal elites who, according to Obama, compromised to maintain their luxurious lifestyles.
According to Business Insider, Obama slammed high-profile legal firms for “setting aside the law” rather than standing up to Donald Trump. The former president mocked attorneys who, he claimed, were more afraid of losing affluent clients than defending justice.
“These lawyers aren’t worried about going to jail,” Obama said. “They’re worried they might not be able to finish that kitchen rehab at their Hampton house.” He added bluntly, “I’m not impressed,” per MSNBC.
Obama’s legal background stretches back to his Harvard Law days, where he landed a prestigious summer job at Sidley & Austin. Before his rise in politics, he worked in civil rights law at Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a firm based in Chicago. Despite this storied background, he now finds himself disillusioned with the same legal elite he once moved among.
