Vance declared the launch of a sweeping $10 million, five-year research effort under the Trump administration. The initiative will investigate the lingering health dangers unleashed by the chemical spill, aiming to deliver real answers and real help to those left in limbo for over two years.
Joining him for the announcement were Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya—a sign this isn’t just political posturing. This is action.
“There was a terrible train crash, and then there was a controlled burn of toxic chemicals that went into the atmosphere,” Vance said in a video announcement. “What happened then is that people got very worried. I’ve been to East Palestine a number of times, and they’re very worried about what are the long-term impacts of these chemicals in the water, in the air. What effect does it have on their kids and grandkids after five years, 10 years, 15 years of exposure?”
Biden and Buttigieg AWOL
Contrast that decisive move with Biden’s approach: silence and abandonment. As Vance recalled:
“As a Senator, it was incredibly frustrating watching the Biden administration refuse to examine the potentially dangerous health impacts on the people of East Palestine following the train derailment.”
The facts don’t lie. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg didn’t bother visiting East Palestine until nearly three weeks after the disaster. Meanwhile, President Trump appeared within days to meet shaken residents and offer support.
Mayor Trent Conaway revealed it took almost two weeks for the White House to even pick up the phone and call local officials. Furious citizens showed up at town meetings demanding answers, shouting, “Where’s Pete Buttigieg?” while hazardous chemicals lingered in their water and soil.
Adding insult to injury, President Biden jetted off to Ukraine while East Palestine residents struggled for help. Conaway blasted that decision as “the biggest slap in the face” to his community.
A Toxic Nightmare
On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train carrying 38 rail cars of hazardous chemicals derailed in East Palestine. Three days later, authorities ordered a controversial controlled burn, sending a colossal plume of black smoke into the sky and forcing thousands to evacuate.
Toxins like vinyl chloride, butyl acrylate, and benzene residue polluted the community. People reported headaches, nausea, and other symptoms, while dead animals floated in local streams. Then-Senator JD Vance visited the site and recorded his horror:
“There are dead worms and dead fish all throughout this water. This is disgusting. And the fact that we have not cleaned up the train crash, the fact that these chemicals are still seeping into the ground is an insult to the people who live in East Palestine.”
Trump Delivers, Biden Dodges
Vance’s new initiative targets the very issues the Biden administration ignored. Scientists will dig into the long-term health effects of the chemicals, monitor ongoing health trends, and ensure clear communication between researchers and the local community.
“This town very well may have been poisoned to facilitate the rapid movement of freight, or at the very least, it was poisoned for reasons that we can’t identify,” Vance said. “I’m proud that we finally have a new president that takes the concerns of everyday, working-class people seriously.”
Vance believes the research could become a model nationwide for other communities exposed to industrial toxins. “No one has tried to do this in this particular way,” he said.
Democrats’ True Priorities Exposed
The Biden administration’s inaction speaks volumes about their priorities. Money for Ukraine? Unlimited. Funds for illegal migrants? Flowing freely. Green New Deal fantasies? No problem. But when working-class Americans begged for help, Biden’s team ghosted them.
Vance tried to work with Biden’s administration as a Senator. Their response? “They refused to do anything to actually study the effects of these long-term exposures on the people of East Palestine.” Meanwhile, Pete Buttigieg was busy chasing headlines and pushing climate policies while families in Ohio suffered.
Ohio Leaders Praise Vance and Trump
Local leaders welcomed Vance’s announcement as the first real step toward justice.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said, “This funding will enable the people of East Palestine to have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that any potential for long-term health effects will be studied by the scientists at the National Institutes of Health.”
Senator Bernie Moreno didn’t mince words either. “Let’s be clear, Joe Biden abandoned East Palestine and left a community of working Americans behind when they needed him most. I’m beyond grateful that President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Secretary Kennedy are moving quickly to make the community whole again.”
Representative Mike Rulli echoed the sentiment: “Unlike the Biden Administration, which tried to sweep under the rug the catastrophic negligence and long-term health consequences of the East Palestine disaster, President Trump, Secretary Kennedy, and Director Bhattacharya are stepping up.”
Hope Returns to East Palestine
For East Palestine, the long wait for answers is finally ending. Research will kick off this fall, bringing hope to a town that’s felt forgotten.
JD Vance kept his promise: he never forgot East Palestine. The real question is whether voters will ever forget how badly the Democrats let this community down.
