“It started with not having anything to wear,” Obama said.
It’s a head-scratcher, considering Michelle Obama’s reported net worth sits at a cool $70 million. Somehow, she expected Americans to believe she skipped a presidential inauguration because her closet came up short.
The former First Lady elaborated, saying she’s typically prepared for any event — even funerals — by traveling with the right outfit. Yet when it came to Trump’s big day, she made a conscious decision not to pack anything suitable.
“I mean, I had affirmatively, cause I’m always prepared for any funeral, anything,” Obama explained. “I walk around with the right dress, I travel with clothes just in case something pops off. So I was like, if I’m not going to do this thing, I got to tell my team, I don’t even want to have a dress ready, right? Because it’s so easy to just say, let me do the right thing.”
Changing Stories and Shifting Narratives
But Michelle didn’t stop there. She pivoted from the “nothing to wear” story to a new angle — insisting she simply didn’t feel like attending and that skipping major events didn’t mean her marriage was crumbling.
“My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me were met with such ridicule and criticism,” she said. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know?”
Interestingly, Michelle had previously offered yet another explanation in a different interview. On a podcast with actress Sophia Bush, Obama claimed she stayed away because she was practicing “setting boundaries” and choosing herself over public expectations.
“I’m here really trying to own my life and intentionally practice making the choice that was right for me,” Obama said. “And it took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do the things that was right for me — that was a hard thing for me to do.”

The multiple explanations are raising eyebrows. If Michelle Obama is living her best life, as she claims, why the constantly changing reasons for boycotting historic events?
The reality is simpler — and far more telling.
Michelle Obama has made no secret of her deep disdain for Donald Trump. Rather than acting with the grace and dignity expected from a former First Lady, she chose to snub a major American tradition because she couldn’t stomach being in the same room with Trump.
That’s not leadership. That’s pettiness.
And for Americans who expect maturity and respect for democratic processes — regardless of political party — Michelle Obama’s actions speak volumes louder than any excuse she can offer.
