In a deeply heartbreaking turn of events, former child actress Sophie Nyweide has passed away at the age of just 24. The young star, remembered for her role in Bella and other films during the late 2000s, died on April 14. Her sudden and tragic death is now the subject of an active police investigation in Vermont.
According to a statement from the Bennington Police Department, officers responded to an early morning 911 call reporting an emergency in a wooded area near the Roaring Branch River. The man who called for help had been with Sophie at the time. Authorities found her unresponsive at the scene, and despite first responders’ best efforts, she was pronounced dead at around 5 a.m.

Law enforcement is currently treating the situation as a “possible unintentional overdose,” though no official cause of death has been confirmed pending autopsy results. The man with Sophie that morning is said to be fully cooperating with police.
“We’re committed to a thorough and comprehensive investigation,” Bennington Police said in their public statement.
