Now a growing fraud scandal is exposing how that same system allegedly allowed people driving luxury cars to collect taxpayer-funded benefits while politicians looked the other way.
And the deeper investigators dig, the worse it looks.
The latest revelations came after Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced investigators uncovered thousands of SNAP recipients tied to high-end luxury vehicles in one Republican-led state alone.
The findings stunned even longtime watchdogs of government waste.
According to data reviewed by the Department of Agriculture and outside investigators, thousands of food stamp recipients were linked to vehicles most working Americans could never dream of owning. The list reportedly included Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Porsche models, Land Rovers, and even thousands of Teslas.
The controversy is reigniting outrage over a little-known Clinton-era policy change that critics say opened the floodgates for abuse.
