Left-wing commentators on social media quickly condemned Roglen, painting her as the villain despite clear video evidence showing that she was encircled and under threat. But many who saw the same footage had a different reaction—applauding her decision to protect herself and escape what appeared to be a volatile and dangerous encounter.
“This is exactly why people are fed up,” one commenter wrote. “You get surrounded by screaming protesters, they hit your car, and then you’re the one who ends up facing charges.”
But charges did come. According to The New York Post, Linda Roglen is now facing careless driving, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and four counts of assault by auto resulting in bodily injury.
Authorities say that three of the protesters sustained minor injuries during the incident. The footage, however, makes it abundantly clear that the situation turned chaotic only after protesters chose to pound on her vehicle and block her path.
Shockingly, New Jersey currently offers no legal protections for drivers who are ambushed or trapped by protesters in the middle of the road. Unlike states such as Florida, Oklahoma, and Iowa—where laws have been passed to protect citizens from civil or criminal liability in similar circumstances—New Jersey has failed to adopt any such common-sense safeguards.
Adding to the legal nightmare for citizens like Roglen is the state’s lack of a “stand your ground” law. In New Jersey, the law instead imposes a “duty to retreat” whenever possible. Even in a terrifying situation like this one, individuals must prove they couldn’t escape before using force to defend themselves.
However, legal experts point out that self-defense may still apply if the person “reasonably believes” that force is immediately necessary and retreat isn’t possible.
This case is already sparking outrage across the country, as Americans are forced to ask: When did it become illegal to protect yourself from a violent mob?
The video tells the story. A woman, alone, surrounded by angry demonstrators slamming on her car. Her instinct was to get to safety—and now she’s facing criminal charges for it.
