A North Carolina family is demanding justice after a beloved 61-year-old man was killed by an illegal immigrant who should never have been in the country to begin with — or behind the wheel of a car.
According to law enforcement, Richard Ferguson Jr. was struck and killed on September 13 after a reckless driver lost control, veered off the road, smashed through two signs, and fatally hit Ferguson. The driver didn’t stop. He sped off, leaving Ferguson dead on the roadside.
Four days later, police arrested 30-year-old Wilmer Fuentes Mejia, a Guatemalan national who had already been deported once and had a long history of criminal behavior. Durham Police confirmed Mejia was charged with hit-and-run, involuntary manslaughter, and driving with a revoked license. He was also wanted for skipping court on a 2020 DUI.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Mejia to ensure he remains in custody and is turned over to federal immigration authorities.
