The reaction of CBS reporter Sharyn Alfonsi was apparent in her reporting, demonstrating her level of surprise at what she saw.
“We were surprised to see the number of people coming through from China — nearly 7,000 miles away,” she said.
The “60 Minutes” crew witnessed firsthand the methodical and regular nature of these crossings taking place right in front of their eyes.
Every thirty minutes, smugglers’ SUVs would bring in groups of about twenty Chinese migrants. Then they would skillfully maneuver under a small section of razor wire as they walked in a single-file line through a gap in the fence.
As the undocumented immigrant arrives, Alfonsi warns her about a dangerous situation and offers assistance.
Only 25 feet away, an armed Border Patrol agent was unable to stop illegal crossings.

The 20-year-old college graduate, who traveled through Thailand, Morocco, Ecuador, and Colombia during his grueling 40-day journey from China, expressed his hope to find employment in Los Angeles.
After severe COVID-19 lockdowns in China destroyed her child care business, a 37-year-old woman made the decision to leave.
A banker, a teacher, a factory worker, and small business owners were among them.
“Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported 37,000 Chinese citizens were apprehended crossing illegally from Mexico into the U.S. — that’s 50 times more than two years earlier,” Alfonsi said.
Introducing Jerry Shuster, a 75-year-old Yugoslavian naturalized immigrant who owns a stunning 17-acre property in California.
Shuster made it clear that he did not force his way into America—rather, he arrived politely.
“You came through the front door,” she responded.
He said, “He entered through the front door,” underscoring the callousness of these undocumented immigrants.
“They come through the hole like they’re coming to their own country over here,” Shuster said. “And nobody [does] nothing about it.”
Shuster discovered smoke coming from his property in May, and it was then discovered that illegal immigrants were destroying his land for shelter and firewood.
Chinese nationals have been regularly coming onto his land in large numbers after crossing the border fence not far away.
Approximately 3,000 migrants, according to Shuster, pass through his land each week.
“They come with the suitcases; they come prepared with the computers just like they got off on a Norwegian cruise ship yesterday,” he said.
Shuster courageously went up against the men who were taking down his trees so they could make firewood. He pleaded with them to stop doing what was damaging.
He was detained by the local police for using warning shots to defend himself against the men who had surrounded him and their damaging behavior.
“They arrest me, they put me in the police car … just protecting my own land,” the frustrated land owner said.
The way Chinese migrants always knew where to enter was revealed by Alfonsi. And what do you know? It was via TikTok that they found it.
“She claimed the Chinese social media app provides detailed guides on hiring smugglers and precise directions to the hole we explored.”
Since they think it is very unlikely that they will be deported, illegal immigrants are very confident about their journey.
After speaking with a Chinese immigration lawyer, Alfonsi learned that China would not accept a Chinese immigrant back and that they would be deported even if the United States rejected their asylum claim.
Only 14% of migrants from other countries were granted asylum by the Department of Justice in comparison to 55% of Chinese migrants.
According to Alfonsi, “60 Minutes” got in touch with D.C.’s Customs and Border Protection. and was informed that border officials “cannot arrest people after they have entered illegally and don’t have authority to stop people from coming through gaps like this one.”
“As for closing that gap, they said it is on their priority list but would require money from Congress,” she said.
The protocols in place for managing individuals who cross the border, as observed and documented by the “60 Minutes” crew, reveal the utter powerlessness of Border Patrol agents.
Illegal immigrants are given thorough directions on how to locate smugglers who can assist them in crossing our border.
Without the authority to prevent someone from entering the country, Border Patrol agents process people after they have already set foot on American territory.
Many have now been allowed to begin their new lives in the nation they entered illegally while they await asylum hearings, following a brief period of detention.
This is open arms being welcomed, not enforced.
It is meaningless to demand increased funding for border agents if they are not empowered to stop crimes before they happen.
The situation has become unmanageable as 3,000 migrants enter each day through one weak point. There is no longer any way for mainstream media to overlook the crisis.
Even if these migrants have the best of intentions, America cannot accommodate everyone on the planet.
The situation is made worse by the very real possibility that some of them are not here for the good of humanity.
